First, you need to download the Java-based Game Boy emulator itself: Download MeBoy F v2.2.1 - Emulator GBC Java (.JAR). You can download it directly from your BlackBerry (Opera Mini).
Important file extension fix: If the file downloads as a .zip or .rar archive, you need to rename it using the stock BlackBerry File Manager. Highlight the downloaded file, press the BlackBerry menu key → Rename, and change the extension to .jar so it becomes an executable Java file. If it already downloaded as a .jar file, you are good to go! Open this file and install it.
.zip
.rar
.jar
Once the emulator is installed, you will need game ROMs. Look for files with these two extensions:
You can find game ROMs by searching online for GameBoy ROM archives.
Recommended directory setup: Create a dedicated folder to store all your ROMs, for example: /Device/home/user/ROMs/ or on your SD Card.
/Device/home/user/ROMs/
CRITICAL TROUBLESHOOTING: The .REM File Name Bug
When transferring ROM files via Bluetooth, some BlackBerry devices automatically append a .rem extension due to media encryption (e.g., Pokemon.gbc.rem). In this state, the emulator will not detect the game, and the file manager won't allow you to rename it directly.
.rem
Pokemon.gbc.rem
How to fix this:
Example rename fix:
Pokemon.gb.rem
Pokemon.gb
Pokemon.gbc
Launch the emulator app. Upon opening, go into Settings:
Save your settings (BlackBerry key → Save) and return to the main menu. Select Start Game.
Permissions prompt: The system will ask if you want to allow the application to read local files without a RIM digital signature. Select Yes. Locate your dedicated ROM folder and select the game you wish to play. You may receive one more unsigned application prompt — safely click Yes again.
Wait 10–20 seconds while the emulator reads the ROM image into memory and launches the game!
Configuring Key Controls:
Press the BlackBerry menu key and select Set buttons. Map your controls according to your preference. Here is our recommended keyboard layout for the QWERTY keyboard:
After assigning controls, save and select Resume from the menu to return to your game!
You're all set! You now have a pocket Game Boy running on your BlackBerry hardware. We strongly recommend keeping your ROM collection stored on a microSD card to conserve internal device storage for native apps.
Happy gaming!
